- Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826) was the third President of the United States from March 4, 1801, to March 3, 1809
- He wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Statute of Religious Freedom.
- His nickname was the Father of the Declaration of Independence.
- At nine years old, Thomas Jefferson began studying Latin, Greek, and French. He was a lawyer.
- Jefferson wanted the Thirteen Colonies to be free from Great Britain.

- Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States. Before him, the country ended at the Mississippi River.
- During his second term, Great Britain and France were at war, so Jefferson worked hard to keep the U.S. out of the war.
