TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Kalen DeBoer already had turned down the job to leave Fresno State to go to Indiana as its offensive coordinator.
Kane Wommack, who had been promoted to be Indiana’s defensive coordinator under Tom Allen, had pursued DeBoer once to help fix the Hoosiers’ offense but couldn’t lure him away. Three weeks later as Wommack was walking into a high school, his phone rang. It was DeBoer.
“Hey, I’m just wondering if that job is still open. Just tell me that it’s closed so I can move on,” Wommack remembered DeBoer telling him.
