Andreas Brehme, former Germany World Cup winner, has died at the age of 63.
The defender made 86 appearances for Germany, scoring eight goals including the winning goal in the 1990 World Cup final against Argentina.
He also made 301 appearances in the Bundesliga, 59 of those coming for Bayern Munich where he won the the title and the German Super Cup. During his four years with Inter Milan, he won the league, the UEFA Cup, and the Italian Super Cup.
Bayern said in a statement: “FC Bayern are extremely saddened by the sudden passing of Andreas Brehme. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
“Andreas Brehme will forever be in our hearts, as a World Cup winner and, more importantly, as a very special person. He will forever be part of the FC Bayern family. Rest in peace, Andi!”
Inter also paid tribute to their former player saying: “A magnificent player, a great Inter fan. Goodbye, Andy. Forever a legend!”
Brehme played for and later managed German second-division side FC Kaiserslautern, who said: “The FCK mourns the loss of Andreas Brehme. He wore the Red Devils jersey for a total of 10 years and became German champion and cup winner with FCK.
“In 1990, he shot the German national team to the World Cup title with his penalty and finally became a football legend. The FCK family is deeply saddened and its thoughts are with Andi Brehme’s relatives and friends. We will honor his memory.”
Franz Beckenbauer, who managed the Germany national team during the 1990 World Cup, passed away earlier this year at the age of 78.
