Apprenticeships: great value for building a long-term career

Sophie Gawin is a construction site management Level 6 apprentice at Willmott Dixon

I chose this apprenticeship because I was excited about the opportunity to learn on the job and complete placements around the business to learn about each discipline. I liked the idea of having a degree, all while receiving support from my colleagues and having the costs of my degree fully covered.

“I’m fortunate to have my degree fully funded by the company through the apprenticeship, allowing me to graduate debt free”

I expressed my interest in construction to my school’s careers advisor, who provided me with a list of companies, including Willmott Dixon. A family friend, aware of my interest, also mentioned seeing an opportunity at Willmott Dixon, so I researched the company and decided to apply.

I have gained a lot from my placements, where different departments within the company took the time to help me understand each discipline. This has enhanced my overall knowledge and my enjoyment of working closely and collaborating within a team. I also enjoy the trainee events, providing the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, communicating with trainees across the whole business.

Studying for this apprenticeship has helped me improve my time management, balancing tasks, and organisational skills. All of which are essential qualities for effectively managing a team on a day-to-day basis as a trainee preconstruction project manager.

As a result of my apprenticeship, I hope to further build on the confidence I’ve already gained throughout the years at my job, while expanding my knowledge to communicate more effectively with colleagues, the supply chain and customers.

I believe an apprenticeship can provide great value for building a long-term career. I’m fortunate to have my degree fully funded by the company through the apprenticeship, allowing me to graduate debt free. In addition, I have a secure role that allows me to apply my knowledge directly to my work, helping me grow professionally while gaining practical experience on the job.
