Astros place starter Hayden Wesneski on IL with right elbow discomfort

HOUSTON — After an ambiguous three weeks that included a dip in Hayden Wesneski’s velocity, skipping his turn in the Houston Astros’ rotation and, on Tuesday, a 40-pitch, four-run first inning, the team placed Wesneski on the injured list with what it described as “right elbow discomfort.”

Wesneski’s IL stint is backdated to May 7, the day after he yielded four runs across a difficult four-inning start against the Milwaukee Brewers. Afterward, Wesneski said he felt physically good.

Wesneski has pitched just twice since April 25, a start in which the velocity dipped on his entire arsenal. Astros manager Joe Espada insisted numerous times during the 11-day layoff that Wesneski was healthy.

Acquired as part of the Kyle Tucker trade this winter, Wesneski posted a 4.50 ERA across his first six starts as an Astro.
