Berkshire council unveils £850m framework

Wokingham Borough Council has put contractors on notice as it prepares to assemble an £850m construction procurement framework.

In a prior-information notice published last week, the Berkshire local authority said it was “seeking to engage with external organisations to gauge the level of market interest in the formation of a framework for the provision of a variety of construction works in lots which will run for up to four years”.

The council said it planned to carve the framework into 10 lots including specialist areas and main construction works.

Lots one to three cover main construction works with respective project values of £180k to £1.5m; £1.5m to £3.5m; and £3.5m to £10m.

The seven other lots relate to roofing work; electrical work; mechanical work; asbestos removal; renewable technology installation; lift installation; and modular building projects worth up to £950,000.

The council said it plans to publish a contract notice for the framework on 5 June.

Wokingham Borough Council has previously had problems with contractors, having been forced to appoint a third main contractor for its 55-home Carnival Place development in June last year.

Feltham Construction was picked to finish the job after Mid-Group collapsed in July 2022 – months after being appointed – and Osborne stopped trading weeks after being named as its replacement.
