Braves ace Spencer Strider has season-ending elbow surgery

The Atlanta Braves will play the rest of the season without ace Spencer Strider, who had surgery Friday to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, the team announced Saturday.

Strider, who was struggling with elbow soreness, underwent an MRI last Saturday that revealed damage to his UCL. The 25-year-old missed his start Thursday, prompting the Braves to call up Allan Winans from Triple A. The right-hander got knocked around by the New York Mets for seven runs in five innings in a 16-4 loss.

This marks Strider’s second UCL procedure in his right elbow after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2019 while at Clemson.

The Braves are off to an 8-4 start to the season and sit first in the National League East.
