Canadiens exercise 2-year option on coach Martin St. Louis’ contract

The Montreal Canadiens have exercised the two-year option on coach Martin St. Louis’ deal, putting him under contract for three more seasons, the team announced Wednesday.

St. Louis took over behind the Montreal bench in December 2022, replacing Dominique Ducharme. The Canadiens finished 30-36-16 and eighth in the Atlantic Division this season, St. Louis’ second full season as coach. Montreal has missed the playoffs three seasons in a row since reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2021 when they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

St. Louis, 48, scored 391 goals and 1,033 points in 1,134 games with the Calgary Flames, Lightning and New York Rangers. He won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2003-04 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.
