Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested Friday in Williamson County, Texas, on a criminal charge of assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation, according to jail records from the county’s sheriff’s office. In Texas, the charge is considered a third-degree felony with a possible punishment of two to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for a guilty verdict.
The Chiefs are “aware and gathering information” about the incident, the team said in a statement Saturday. The NFL said in a statement Saturday: “We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club.”
Details of the incident were not immediately available. Worthy could face discipline under the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy.
Worthy’s arrest comes less than one year after fellow Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice was charged with one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury after being involved in a multi-vehicle crash and fleeing the scene of an accident in Dallas.
Rice was not placed on the commissioner’s exempt list and played in the Chiefs’ first four games before suffering a season-ending ACL injury. He could be suspended for multiple games while the league awaits the conclusion of investigations.
Williamson County is located just north of Austin, where Worthy, 21, was a standout receiver at the University of Texas. He was selected by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft and posted 638 receiving yards and nine TDs. In the postseason, he put up 287 yards and three touchdowns as the Chiefs won the AFC Championship then fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
