12 Ocean FUN FACTS

  1. The ocean covers more than 70 percent of the earth’s surface.
  2. Coral reefs make up a very small fraction of the ocean – less than 1%. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands.
  3. There are four oceans: the Atlantic ocean, the Pacific ocean, the Indian ocean, and the Arctic ocean, although some countries recognize the Antarctic as the Southern ocean too.
  4. The deepest part of the ocean is called the Challenger Deep and is located beneath the western Pacific Ocean in the southern end of the Mariana Trench, and it’s 35,876 feet deep.
  5. If you placed Mount Everest at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the peak would still be 7,000 feet below sea level.
  6. Water temperature in the oceans decrease as depth increases. The temperature range extends from 86 °F at the sea surface to 30.2 °F at the seabed.

Ocean life is really interesting!
  1. Like ponds and lakes, the ocean is separated into 4 main marine environments: intertidal, pelagic, abyssal, and benthic, each with a large diversity of species of animals.
  2. About 94% of the earth’s wildlife is found in the ocean.
  3. The volcano Mauna Kea, on Hawaii, has most of its base on the ocean floor, nearly 20,000 feet below the surface.
  4. Nazaré, a town in Portugal, produces the biggest ocean waves in the world, although the largest recorded wave ocurred in Lituya Bay, Alaska, reaching a surprising height of 1,720 feet (taller than the Empire State building).
  5. There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste estimated to be in our oceans.  
  6. Climate change affects our ocean, as it absorbs 90% of the heat and it induces ice-melting, sea level rise, marine heatwaves, and the ocean acidification.
