Investigation launched into Gogglebox star’s death

Police and the HSE are conducting a joint investigation into the death of TV star George Gilbey, who has died following a fall from height while working.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said it was conducting a joint investigation with police into the incident that occurred in Shoebury, Essex, last week.

Essex Police said in a statement: “We received a report of an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at around 10am on 27 March during which a man who was working at height had fallen and sustained an injury.

“The ambulance service including air ambulance were in attendance. Sadly, the man died at the scene.”

Media reports have suggested that Gilbey, who appeared on Gogglebox and Celebrity Big Brother, had been working as an electrician on a warehouse project at the time of the tragedy. Tributes have poured in for the star.

Construction News understands that a contract was awarded in January for solar panel installation works at the building, which is owned by kitchen cloth and sponge supplier EGL Homecare Ltd.

A man was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. He has since been released under investigation, Essex Police said, adding that its joint investigation with the HSE continues.

Crown Prosecution Service guidance says that gross negligence manslaughter can be committed by anyone who is connected in some way to a workplace of any nature.

“The deceased victims may be employees, contractors, subcontractors, and members of the public visiting or passing by the workplace when a fatal incident happens,” it says.
