Jannik Sinner withdraws from Italian Open

World No 2 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Italian Open in Rome with a hip injury.

The problem emerged during his win over Russian Karen Khachanov in Madrid, and forced the Italian to pull out of his quarter-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada.

Now, Sinner joins world No 3 Carlos Alcaraz in missing the Italian Open through injury, a tournament for which both men would have been favourites.

“It is not easy to write this message, but after having spoken with doctors and specialists about my hip injury again, I will not be able to play in Rome,” he said in a statement on X.

“Obviously I am very sad not to have recovered, this being one of my favourite tournaments.”

Sinner will join Alcaraz, and world No 4 Daniil Medvedev — who is yet to withdraw but retired injured in Madrid — in racing to be fit for the French Open, which begins in Paris on May 26.
