Laing O’Rourke is in line to build a major new facility as part of a £200m upgrade of health infrastructure in West Yorkshire.
The contractor was named as preferred partner to deliver the design stage of a four-storey clinical building at Calderdale Royal Hospital.
A new accident and emergency department will be housed within the proposed hub, containing resuscitation bays and assessment rooms, as will 10 inpatient wards.
The project forms part of the £200m Foundations for our Future programme to transform hospital services for patients across West Yorkshire.
Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Brendan Brown said: “This announcement marks the start of an important milestone.
“We will be working closely with our patients and colleagues to co-design the new facilities in a way that best meets their needs.”
Laing O’Rourke chief operating officer Cathal O’Rourke added: “We’re excited to begin this journey with Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust to provide a state-of-the-art emergency department that will serve the local community for decades to come.
“We’ll use our blueprint for hospitals, which involves working with the trust, its patient groups and the wider project team to influence design and deliver a programme of work that embeds modern, sustainable methods of construction that will ensure the highest quality, safer working environments, and programme accuracy.”
Enabling works are due to start at the end of this year, with the project due for completion by the end of 2029.
Laing O’Rourke earlier this year revealed plans to cut 60 jobs at its offsite factory in a bid to reduce operating costs.
