Mace has been appointed as construction manager on remediation works at Birmingham City Football Club’s stadium, taking over from Buckingham Group.
The stadium’s Tilton and Kop stands have been partially shut since 2020 due to asbestos damage, and their remediation was left with an uncertain future after Buckingham collapsed into administration last week.
In a statement, Birmingham City Football Club said that it will be responsible for hiring and managing subcontractors.
Birmingham City chief executive Garry Cook said: “By appointing Mace to the construction-management role, we have ensured we will be in a position to achieve our goal of having close to 30,000 Blues fans, in person at St. Andrew’s, supporting the team later this autumn.”
Work on the site stopped earlier this month, when Buckingham announced its intention to appoint administrators. It restarted at 9am yesterday (11 September).
Dan Easthope, managing director of property UK & Europe in Mace’s consultancy business, said: “Although the circumstances are unfortunate, we’re pleased that Birmingham City have put their faith in us.”
Work on the lower Tilton Stand had been due to complete by 15 September, while the lower Kop Stand was given a target date of 16 November.
On Friday (8 September), it was announced that Lancashire firm Rayner Rowen Construction had been appointed to finish building Liverpool Football Club’s Anfield Road Stand, which was impacted by Buckingham’s insolvency.
