Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer has withdrawn from the Germany international squad after sustaining left adductor injury in training.
The 37-year-old goalkeeper will miss his side’s games against France on March 23 and the Netherlands on March 26.
Bayern face Arsenal at Emirates Stadium in the quarter-final of the Champions League on April 9. Before that, they host Borussia Dortmund and then travel to Heidenheim in their bid to chase down Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen.
Germany confirmed the injury in a statement which read: “Manuel Neuer left early due to a torn muscle fibre in his left adductor and is out of the two upcoming international matches.
“He sustained the injury in training that morning. Get well soon, Manu.”
Neuer’s injury leaves Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Fulham’s Bernd Leno and Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann as goalkeeping options in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad.
Neuer previously sustained a leg fracture during a skiing tour in December 2022, returning to action in October 2023. In an interview with The Athletic, the veteran said that he told his Bayern team-mates about his skiing injury in their WhatsApp group and apologised for the incident.
Sven Ulreich, the 35-year-old former Stuttgart goalkeeper, stood in for Neuer while he was injured but has returned to a No 2 role since last autumn. Israel international Daniel Peretz is Bayern’s other senior goalkeeper but the 23-year-old has only played once for Bayern since joining from Maccabi Tel Aviv last summer and has spent most of 2024 out with a knee injury.
Bayern defender Sascha Boey, meanwhile, will also miss the next “few weeks” due to an injury to his left hamstring.
The 23-year-old, who joined the German club from Galatasaray in January, sustained the injury in training with the diagnosis being confirmed by Bayern’s medical unit earlier on Wednesday.
Boey has been limited to making just two appearances for Bayern having previously sustained a muscle injury in February.
