Mario Lemina replaced as Wolves captain following post-West Ham match incident

Mario Lemina has been replaced as Wolverhampton Wanderers captain by Nelson Semedo following the post-match altercation he had at West Ham United on Monday.

Lemina, 31, lost his temper after the final whistle at the London Stadium following an argument with opposition skipper Jarrod Bowen.

He went on to shove Semedo and fellow team-mate Toti before squaring up to and pushing first-team coach Shaun Derry.

Lemina apologised for his actions on Tuesday but Gary O’Neil has revealed that, following a conversation with the midfielder, a mutual agreement has been reached for him to relinquish the captaincy.

“Mario is fine, it was a conversation and nothing more,” O’Neil told reporters at his press conference. “The other night sparked the conversation, but it was one that had to be had. We now move forward and we’ve dealt with it.”

Monday’s 2-1 loss leaves Wolves 19th in the Premier League, four points from safety.

They return to action against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

“Can we get the best out of Mario Lemina every week? And also can we get the best out of Nelson,” O’Neil added. “We dealt with it earlier in the week and the focus now is on Ipswich.

“Mario is fine and Nelson is fine and we’re ready to go against Ipswich.”

O’Neil says he will be without goalkeeper Jose Sa and midfielder Pablo Sarabia at Molineux with both players not yet fit to return from injuries.
