NEW YORK — The New York Mets plan to call up right-handed starter Christian Scott, their top pitching prospect, a league source confirmed to The Athletic Thursday afternoon.
Scott will start the Mets’ game Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays, the source said.
Scott, whom the Mets drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 Amateur Draft from the University of Florida, where he pitched as a reliever, has impressed at each level of the minors since being converted into a starter.
Scott entered the season as a borderline top-100 prospect, but climbed some rankings after flashing dominant stuff at Triple A.
In five starts (25 1/3 innings) with Triple-A Syracuse, Scott has a 3.20 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 36 strikeouts. He has issued just six walks. Nearly all of the damage against Scott has been home runs; he has surrendered seven.
Before 2024, Scott never pitched above Double A, where he made only 12 starts last year and produced a 2.47 ERA. Heading into the season, the Mets thought that Scott could handle Triple A despite his inexperience in the upper minor leagues because of his pitching smarts, maturity and how he attacks hitters, a club official said.
The Mets are calling up Scott now because of his success and because the club has a need. The Mets are in the middle of a stretch of 26 games in 27 days, with the lone off day being May 9.
