Morgan Sindall has nabbed an early-works contract on a 9 acre redevelopment in Liverpool.
The contractor is also delivering masterplanning on the scheme, Paddington South, where work has already begun.
Paddington South is the second of three phases on the £1bn, 30 acre Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool) project, also known as Paddington Village.
Paddington South is a mixed-use scheme comprising commercial, education and residential accommodation, as well as a new train station linking up to Liverpool’s underground network.
The brownfield site will eventually include public green space and is set to improve the area’s biodiversity by 10 per cent.
Construction News requested the value of Morgan Sindall’s contract, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
The KQ Liverpool scheme will provide 1.8 million square feet of science, technology, education and health space, including a Novotel hotel, a clean-energy multistorey car park and an office block called the Spine Building, which has already been built as part of Paddington Central, the first phase of the programme.
KQ Liverpool is being developed by the University of Liverpool in collaboration with Liverpool City Council.
Paddington North will follow as the third phase.
Morgan Sindall’s area director for the North West, Steven Gregory, said Paddington Village would continue to be “a resounding endorsement of early engagement, sustainable innovation and social value”.
“The importance of providing biodiverse, net-zero facilities is ever-increasing, and large cities are often bereft of high-quality green spaces,” he added.
“We are excited to be involved in this phase of works that will add not only green space to the community, but also encourage carbon-efficient commuting and biodiversity for wildlife to thrive in, which is central to Morgan Sindall’s ethos.”
Liverpool City Council cabinet member for growth and economy Nick Small said: “An expanded Paddington Village is vital to the city’s future economic growth and to creating a conveyor belt of high-skilled jobs.
“Once delivered, this former brownfield site will become the engine room for the delivery of our wider Investment Zone plans for the coming decade and beyond.
“I’m delighted the focus on providing a world-class development is as much on sustainability and creating a new green lung in the city, and look forward to seeing the masterplan for the site take shape and develop.”
Morgan Sindall’s appointment comes a month after it reported surging revenue and profit, with the latter up more than a fifth on the previous year. It also took second place on the recent CN100 ranking of the UK’s biggest construction firms, published earlier this month.
