How to make a doily paper flower

I recently made these pretty doily flowers with the kids at school. We are moving into a gardening unit and they love to use paint, so I thought this would be such a fun art and craft project for them to do. We are working on fine motor skills including cutting and tearing paper. Instead of using scissors for cutting, I had them tear the paper to make the stem and leaves.

We are going to use lace paper doilies, watercolor paint, and construction paper to make our pretty spring flowers. The kids can attach them to handmade cards, teachers can decorate the classroom door with them, or you can use them as a pretty spring decoration at home. Make them in a variety of colors to hang them as a garland across the mantel or in front of a window.

Instructions for making doily paper flowers

Step 1

step 1 for making a paper doily flower is to paint the doily using watercolor paints
Paint your lace paper doilies using watercolors.

Use watercolor paints to bring your lace paper doilies to life. Set your painted doilies aside to dry before you move on to the next step. Kids will love experimenting with blending the colors together. What I love about this craft is that no two flowers will be alike.

Watercolor painting tip:  Don’t forget an art smock and a small tub of water.

Step 2

Step 2 for making a paper doily flower is to attach a stem and leaves cut out of construction paper
Add a stem and leaves to your flower using construction paper and glue.

Cut out a stem and leaves from construction paper and attach them to the flower using glue. Alternatively, you can do as I did with the kids and have them tear the paper to make the stem and leaves.

This turned out to be one of our favorite doily craft ideas. Kids of nearly any age can participate and the resulting DIY flower works great as art, card makers supplies or even for scrapbookers. Kids loved working with the paper lace (they had seen their grandma’s doilies as a doily table runner) – it is definitely much easier (and cheaper) than fabric doilies, but the same elaborate detailed patterns are present.
