Twins' Carlos Correa exits game in Arizona after getting hit by pitch

PHOENIX — Carlos Correa was hit with a pitch and immediately exited Thursday afternoon’s blowout.

Batting in the seventh inning with the Minnesota Twins ahead 13-5, Correa was removed from the game after a pitch from Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Bryce Jarvis struck him on the right forearm. With his left arm supporting his right arm, Correa informed the Twins dugout by shaking his head that he’d need to be replaced. Correa’s X-rays were negative and he sustained a right forearm contusion, according to the Twins.

A potential injury would be yet another huge blow to a Twins team that suddenly has found its footing after dealing with constant injuries earlier in the season.

Correa was in the middle of continuing a three-week hot streak on Thursday, reaching base in all five trips to the plate and scoring two runs. Dating back to June 6, Correa entered Thursday slashing .423/.471/.628 with four homers and 15 RBIs in his past 87 plate appearances.

The Twins’ highest-paid player missed 16 games earlier this season with an intercostal strain. Despite long absences from Byron Buxton, Royce Lewis and Max Kepler, the Twins are on their way to a 45-36 first half.

The team’s offense had 13 more runs on the board at the time of Correa’s exit in a month in which they’d produced the third-highest OPS in baseball and entered Thursday tied for fourth in runs.
