UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis was arrested Oct. 25 and charged with reckless driving after police allegedly recorded him driving 136 miles per hour in a 50-mph zone, according to Harris County (Texas) court records. The fan favorite was issued a misdemeanor charge and given a $100 personal recognizance bond and released the same day as his arrest.
The arrest comes just days before Lewis is scheduled to face Jailton Almeida in the main event of Saturday’s Fight Night card in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Lewis’ 14 knockout wins are the most in UFC history and he needed just 33 seconds to win his last fight in July. The 38-year-old joined the UFC in 2014 and has been in two career title fights. Along the way, he’s been awarded Performance of the Night five times and Fight of the Night three times.
According to the court report, Lewis was charged for driving “in willful and wanton disregard for the safety of persons and property, by driving at a high rate of speed, and changing lanes in an unsafe manner.”
Lewis is set to next appear in court on Dec. 27. As of Tuesday evening, the UFC has not announced any changes to Saturday’s card.
