VolkerFitzpatrick scoops £34m Kent highways job

VolkerFitzpatrick has snagged a £34m job to deliver a 550-metre-long road near Canterbury.

The contractor will both design and build the section of a “new strategic highway” called the Sturry Link Road, which is being built on the A28 to serve around 16,000 new homes and ease congestion in the village of Sturry, near Canterbury.

The £34m contract covers a 550-metre-long road, with a 250-metre leg set to be built over the Great Stour River, the river’s flood plain, and the railway line from Canterbury to Ramsgate. That section of the road will be supported by a multi-span structure up to 42 metres in height.

VolkerFitzpatrick will also deliver surface water storage ponds and environmental mitigation work on the site.

Kent County Council, which is leading the project, said a level crossing allowing trains to run through the village of Sturry currently interrupts traffic running along the A28, creating congestion. The new road will allow traffic to avoid the level crossing. The project is being funded via the Local Growth Fund.

Construction work is set to start next year and finish in summer 2026.

This is the latest highway job won by VolkerFitzpatrick, after it scooped a £19m contract to build a highway bridge over the North Downs rail line in Surrey last August.

In 2022, the contractor also won a £174m job to build a film and TV production centre in east London.
