West Virginia finalizing 5-year deal to hire Drake’s Darian DeVries as basketball coach: Source

West Virginia is finalizing a five-year deal to hire Darian DeVries as the program’s men’s basketball coach, a program source confirmed Sunday. DeVries coached Drake to the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four seasons, including in this year’s tournament, where the Bulldogs lost to Washington State in the first round Thursday.

West Virginia parted with interim coach Josh Eilert on March 13. Eilert took over for Bob Huggins, who had coached the Mountaineers for 16 seasons before a resignation saga after Huggins was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in June 2023.

That happened about a month after Huggins made anti-gay slurs in a live interview on a Cincinnati radio show. A resignation letter from Huggins was sent out from the school, but Huggins contended it was “a false statement” and that he should have kept his job.

West Virginia went 9-23 and lost to Cincinnati in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament.
