Vincent Kompany 'not looking for excuses' after Bayern Munich surrender two-goal lead in Bochum home defeat

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany says his side will not make any excuses for losing at home to Bochum on Saturday having taken an early two-goal lead.

Raphael Guerriero scored twice for Bayern within the opening 28 minutes to seemingly put them on course for victory at home to the Bundesliga’s 16th-placed side, while Serge Gnabry also missed a penalty for the league leaders.

Jakov Medic pulled a goal back for Bochum in the 31st minute before Bayern midfielder Joao Palhinha was red-carded three minutes before half-time, with Ibrahima Sissoko and Matu Bero scoring in the second half to secure a shock win for Dieter Hecking’s side.

“We are not looking for excuses or apologies, we lost,” Kompany, whose side had 74 per cent possession, said after the match.

“We will analyse it and must take responsibility for it. It is important that we concentrate on the reaction. Even with 10 men, we must have the ambition to win the game or at least not to lose.

“We did not manage that. Bochum deserves to feel that they have won, I know how much energy it takes to do that. For us, it is now about the next game.”

Thomas Muller, who started the game as Bayern’s captain due to Manuel Neuer’s absence through injury, admitted that Bayern made “mistakes” but the red card should not have accounted for the defeat.

“Just because you’re down to 10 men doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to concede goals,” Muller said after the game.

Harry Kane, who was rested from the start and took the armband from Muller when he replaced his team-mate in the 62nd minute, said his side were unable to deal with the “momentum shifting” in the game.

“After the red card, it shows that at this level you have to stay focused for 90 minutes or you can be punished — and that’s exactly what happened today,” Kane said.

Bayern remain eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, who lost at home to Werder Bremen on Saturday. Borussia Dortmund also suffered a home defeat, with Augsburg 1-0 winners at Signal Iduna Park. Per Opta, this marks the first time since the 20th Bundesliga matchday of the 2006-07 season that Bayern, Leverkusen and Dortmund all lost on the same matchday.

The leading two German sides play the second leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on Tuesday in Leverkusen, with Bayern leading 3-0 from the first leg.
